German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer aims to represent his country at the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is set to become the latest player to aim to represent his country at the FIFA World Cup in 2026, after announcing his retirement from international football.

Neuer, who has been with Bayern Munich for over a decade and has won numerous domestic and European titles during his time there, announced his decision to retire from international football on Friday, ending his career as one of Germany's most successful goalkeepers.

The 34-year-old has played more than 100 games for Germany, winning three Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal trophies, and two UEFA Champions League victories. He also made several appearances for the German national team at the highest level, including at the 2014 World Cup where he was named man-of-the-match in Germany's opening game against Portugal.

In a statement released by the German Football Association (DFB), Neuer said: "I am extremely proud to have represented my country for so many years. I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career, both on and off the pitch."

Neuer's decision comes just weeks after England's Harry Kane announced his intention to play for his country again following his withdrawal from the squad for the recent Euro 2021 tournament due to injury.

While Neuer may not be able to compete for Germany in the upcoming World Cup, he remains a key figure within the national team and will continue to provide guidance and inspiration to younger players looking to follow in his footsteps.
