Doku, the Algerian footballer, has renewed his contract with Rennes, adding a release clause worth €70 million to his current deal.
The news was announced by the French club on their official website, stating that Doku will remain at the club until June 2024, and that he has signed a new three-year contract extension.
In addition to the renewal of his contract, Doku also received a €15 million signing bonus from the club, bringing his total salary to €20 million per year.
Doku's departure from Rennes has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, as the midfielder had previously stated that he wanted to leave the club to play for a bigger club.
However, after discussions between the player and the club failed to reach a compromise, Doku decided to extend his stay at Rennes and sign a new contract.
The addition of a release clause to his current contract is likely to make it even more difficult for any interested clubs to sign Doku in the future, as they would have to pay a large sum of money before they could bring him back to their club.
Despite the fact that Doku has extended his contract with Rennes, there is still uncertainty surrounding his future in French football. The midfielder has previously expressed interest in playing for a team outside of France, and there have been reports linking him to several top European clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool.
It remains to be seen whether or not Doku will continue his career in France or move abroad, but one thing is certain - the Algeria international will undoubtedly continue to be a key player for Rennes in the coming seasons.
